Georgia man sentenced 30 years after 'horrific' beating of his 2 toddlers for messy bedroom

A Georgia man was sentenced to three decades in prRead more

A Georgia man was sentenced to three decades in prison for brutally beating his two children — a two-year-old son and three-year-old daughter — for making a mess in their bedroom.

Dillan Michael Tennant, 24, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with the first half without the possibility of parole, by Catoosa County Superior Court Judge Chris Arnt. This comes after Tennant was convicted last month on two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree.

During the trial, prosecutors showed evidence that Tennant "physically abused his two-year-old son and three-year-old daughter by beating them repeatedly, leaving horrific bruising on the toddlers," the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office said in a press release.

In March 2023, Tennant was with the two children at a home in Rossville, Georgia, he shared with his parents and brother.

MAN GETS 4 DEATH SENTENCES FOR KIDNAPPING, RAPE AND MURDER OF 5-YEAR-OLD GEORGIA GIRL

Tennant became enraged because, while he failed to properly supervise the children, they made a mess in their bedroom, according to the release. Tennant hit the children repeatedly over two days, including using a board to strike his two-year-old son.

He then left the home with his children and took them to a male friend's home in an effort to hide the injuries he had inflicted on the children, according to the release.

After Tennant and his children returned home days later, the children's grandparents and uncle quickly noticed the bruising and injuries and called law enforcement to report that Tennant had abused his children.

Tennant initially denied he hurt the children when questioned by law enforcement and claimed another family member must have injured them. But despite admitting to noticing the severity of the children's injuries, Tennant never sought medical attention for them.

GEORGIA MAN WHO ADDED ANTIFREEZE INTO BREAST MILK FOR NEWBORN DAUGHTER SENTENCED TO PRISON

Witnesses from the Department of Family and Children's Services testified during the trial that the children's bruising was some of the worst that had been seen in their career, according to the release.

A doctor from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation testified that the injuries "were non-accidental" and were caused by "repeated strikes using a great deal of force."

Tennant is prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with his children and is not allowed to have contact with any children under the age of 18.

"Child abuse and crimes against children will always be aggressively prosecuted by my office and [Assistant District Attorney Deanna] Reisman's prosecution team and the Catoosa County Sheriff's Office did an amazing job in doing that in this case," District Attorney Clayton M. Fuller said in the release. "This child abuser will have plenty of time to clean his room in the Department of Corrections."

Republican aims to break decades long Senate election losing streak in this blue state

On April 20, 2024

Republican candidate Curtis Bashaw of New Jersey iRead more

EXCLUSIVE - It's been over a half century since a Republican won a Senate election in blue state New Jersey.

But real estate developer and hotelier Curtis Bashaw is optimistic about his party's prospects in November's elections to end the decades-long losing streak.

Bashaw, one of the two leading contenders in a multi-candidate field in June's GOP Senate primary in New Jersey, emphasized "I believe this is a once in a generation opportunity."

"I can’t wait to see how we prove to the rest of the country that New Jersey is a lot more purple than people realize," he added in a national digital exclusive interview with Fox News.

THIS POPULAR FORMER GOP GOVERNOR AIMS TO FLIP A SENATE SEAT IN HIS DEEP BLUE STATE

A major reason for Bashaw's optimism is the prospect of a three-way race in New Jersey. Longtime Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez, who was indicted last year on federal corruption charges, is not running for re-election as a Democrat and instead is mulling an independent bid, which polls indicate would potentially take votes away from likely Democratic Senate nominee Rep. Andy Kim.

EMBATTLED DEMOCRATIC SENATOR MAY TESTIFY AGAINST HIS WIFE

Bashaw, an entrepreneur and historic preservationist who is recognized in the Garden State for leading the restorations of the historic Congress Hall and the Virginia Hotel in Cape May, at the southern tip of the Jersey shore, is a first time politician.

"I'm a political outsider," Bashaw emphasized. "I’m a business guy. I built a business over 35 years restoring landmark abandoned hotels."

And he highlighted that he grew his business from 25 to 1,000 employees.

"I’m in it because I want to unshackle small business from over regulation," he said.

Bashaw's chief rival for the GOP nomination is Christine Serrano Glassner, who's served for four years as mayor of Mendham Borough, in the northern part of the state.

Bashaw holds a formidable fundraising advantage in the Republican race - thanks in part to a large self-investment in his campaign.

He also enjoys an advantage on the primary ballot, as he has the county line in two-thirds of the state's 21 counties.

SIX KEY SENATE SEATS REPUBLICANS AIM TO FLIP IN NOVEMBER

New Jersey has long allowed counties to print ballots that include a prominent party line, which are widely viewed as helping candidates with establishment backing. Kim sued in federal court to overturn the county lines in the Democratic Primary. But the GOP county lines were upheld.

"New Jersey is made up of thousands and thousands and thousands of small businesspeople.  We are going to get to them really quickly and our name ID will go up really fast," Bashaw said.

And pointing to a busy schedule on the campaign trail ahead of the primary, Bashaw showcased that "I go to six coffees a day. I go talk to every single county in our state. I put a lot of miles on the car."

Asked about former President Donald Trump, who is the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee, Bashaw told Fox News "I’m supporting this ticket top to bottom."

It's been 36 years since a Republican carried New Jersey in a White House race, but Trump is planning a campaign stop in the state next month.

"Donald Trump thinks New Jersey’s in play. I agree with him. Trump believes he can flip the country from blue to red. I believe we can flip this Senate seat from blue to red," Bashaw said.

He argued that "there’s a massive opportunity to pull" New Jersey’s large pool of unaffiliated voters "to the Republican tent…. We are going to pull those unaffiliated voters our way this fall."

National Republicans to date have not made any investments in the Senate race in the Garden State.

But National Republican Senatorial Committee communications director Mike Berg said "we’re keeping a close eye on New Jersey."

A national Democratic Senate campaign aide, asked about the contest, told Fox News that "Democrats have won every New Jersey Senate race since 1978 and 2024 will be no different."

Bashaw, in his interview, spotlighted a couple of key issues, including crime.

"New Jerseyans are not feeling safe and secure in their homes," he argued.

On immigration and border security, another key issue Republicans are spotlighting, he charged that New Jersey "is now a border state. There are illegals coming into all of our counties."

"The woke ideology has permeated through our culture and we now have in our state, schools keeping secrets from parents about very, very, personal decisions," he claimed, as he defended parental rights in public education.

On the issue of abortion, which Democrats are spotlighting, Bashaw pointed to the two-year-old blockbuster decision by the Supreme Court's conservative majority that overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling, which for a half century had legalized abortion nationwide.

"I believe that the Dobbs decision was the correct decision," Bashaw said.

But he added that "I don't support a federal ban," which some in his party are backing.

The Dobbs decision moved the fight over abortion back to the states, and in New Jersey abortion is legal in all stages of pregnancy.

"New Jersey’s decided it," Bashaw said, before charging that "the Democrats are the extremists on this issue, passing legislation allowing abortions up until the day of birth."

Left-wing climate group with shady backing takes prominent role against gas stoves

On April 20, 2024

An upstart climate activist group known as Gas LeaRead more

A secretive climate activist group with significant financial backing is quietly taking on a more prominent role advocating against natural, gas-powered appliances, like stoves.

The Gas Leaks Action Campaign — which appears to have been first established in late 2021 or early 2022 — recently launched a $1 million ad campaign warning of the dangers posed by natural gas, the largest-ever effort of its kind. The group states on its website that natural gas harms the environment, pollutes the air inside homes and makes stoves "constantly at risk of explosion."

The group has also spearheaded a campaign against the American Gas Association (AGA), the nation's leading industry group representing natural gas providers. At a Washington, D.C. event earlier this month, Gas Leaks hosted Sens. Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., along with several environmental groups like the Sierra Club to blast the AGA's lobbying activities.

"Instead of turning off the tap on fossil fuels, our country has been flooding the market with gas and, unless we do something, we are all going to drown," said Markey, who is an original sponsor of the Green New Deal.

BIDEN ADMIN PRESSURED SNOPES TO CHANGE ITS FACT-CHECK RATING ON RUMORED GAS STOVE BAN, INTERNAL EMAILS SHOW

AGA President and CEO Karen Harbert said in a statement that natural gas is "fundamental to protecting America’s energy security, achieving our environmental goals, and promoting economic prosperity."

"Despite advocacy groups willfully spreading misinformation and promoting ill-informed energy policy that would drive up prices and sacrifice environmental progress, this industry will continue to implement inclusive solutions to deliver life-essential energy and reduce emissions for our customers and communities," she added.

BIDEN OFFICIALS EXPLORED CRACKING DOWN ON GAS STOVES EARLIER THAN PREVIOUSLY KNOWN, EMAILS SHOW

Meanwhile, according to a Fox News Digital review of job search sites, Gas Leaks has posted several positions, including executive director, senior communications director, digital manager and digital designer, over the last two years with salaries ranging from $65,000 to $160,000. Altogether, the positions indicate the group's yearly salary and wage costs potentially exceed $465,000.

But despite Gas Leaks' growth and increasing influence with Democratic lawmakers and similarly climate-focused organizations, the group shares very little about itself online – its founders, funding and history are all shielded from public view. A Reuters report last month broadly stated that Gas Leaks was "formed by climate advocacy veterans."

A LinkedIn search revealed that those "advocacy veterans" include Caleb Heeringa, a former Sierra Club communications official who serves as Gas Leaks' campaign director; and Jamie Henn, the founder of Fossil Free Media, co-founder of 350.org and a board member of Gas Leaks.

According to Gas Leaks' "about page," which appears to have been removed from the group's site but remains archived, Gas Leaks is supported by the clean energy advocacy organization Climate Nexus, which is itself fiscally supported by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, a nonprofit that regularly funnels money from donors to progressive initiatives.

The arrangement means Gas Leaks isn't required to file its own 990 tax ID form with the Internal Revenue Service and can, therefore, operate without publicly sharing information about its internal operations or finances.

BIDEN ADMIN IS PREPARING TO TARGET AMERICANS' GAS FURNACES AMID STOVE CRACKDOWN

"Senator Whitehouse conveniently abandons his soapbox railing against dark money when it’s time for him to cozy up to a dark money group that is pushing his preferred radical climate agenda," said Caitlin Sutherland, Executive Director of Americans for Public Trust, a nonprofit government watchdog group. Sutherland noted the contrast between both Whitehouse's relationship with Gas Leaks and his high-profile push against dark money in politics.

"This latest pop-up green group is pedaling misinformation in a shadowy attempt to ban gas stoves."

A Fox News Digital analysis of grants identified a single Gas Leaks donor: the California-based Heising-Simons Foundation, which states on its website that it seeks to advance "sustainable solutions in climate and clean energy, enable groundbreaking research in science, enhance the education of our youngest learners and support human rights for all people."

In 2022 and 2023, the Heising-Simons Foundation wired two $150,000 grants to Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, earmarking both for the Gas Leaks Action Campaign.

The Heising-Simons Foundation has reportedly given more than $3.3 million in recent years to the Rocky Mountain Institute, a climate think tank that was involved in the aggressive push last year targeting gas stoves via regulation. The Heising-Simons Foundation was also co-founded in 2007 by Mark Heising, who remains its vice chair and is involved financially in a number of green energy companies.

BIDEN'S ENERGY SECRETARY MET WITH CHINA-CONNECTED GROUP FUELING GAS STOVE BANS IN US

"The only thing green about today’s environmental movement is the billions in cash that flow freely between lefty billionaires, their operatives in the green movement, and the politicians who do their bidding," said Tom Pyle, president of the Institute for Energy Research, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit.

"Their campaign to ban natural gas stoves is yet another example of the nexus between self-dealing wealthy elites like Mark Heising, green pressure groups like the Rocky Mountain Institute, and the Democratic Party machine."

While environmentalists have for years sought to crack down on natural gas and gas appliances over their climate impacts, the push came to a head early last year when Richard Trumka Jr., a member of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, said banning gas stoves was "on the table." The Department of Energy then issued regulations targeting gas stoves shortly thereafter.

In a social media post at the time, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm pointed to a Rocky Mountain Institute-funded study and said the government "must FIX this" by increasing access to electric stovetops. The study, which was also cited by environmentalists and other officials, tied 12% of childhood asthma cases to gas stoves.

Gas Leaks, Climate Nexus, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and the Heising-Simons Foundation didn't respond to requests for comment for purposes of this story. Markey and Whitehouse also didn't respond to requests for comment.

The man who set himself on fire outside the New York City courthouse where former President Trump's hush money trial was being held has been pronounced dead, according to officials.

Maxwell Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Florida, died Friday night from his severe burns after lighting himself on fire earlier in the day inside Collect Pond Park near the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse.

Azzarello was pronounced dead by hospital staff at about 10:30 p.m., a spokesperson for the New York City Police Department confirmed to Fox News Digital.

At around 1:30 p.m., Azzarello looked through his backpack and threw numerous pamphlets in the air, before he poured accelerant on his body and ignited a lighter in front of witnesses. The pamphlets, which included a link to a Substack page, were "propaganda-based" and promoted far-reaching conspiracy theories such as that "some of our educational institutions are a front for the mob," officials said.

FLORIDA MAN SET HIMSELF ON FIRE NEAR NYC COURTHOUSE HOLDING TRUMP TRIAL

After he was engulfed in flames, Azzarello took a few steps and fell onto a police barrier and to the ground. Court officers, police officers and other witnesses attempted to extinguish the flames with coats and other items. The fire was eventually extinguished by responding police.

Azzarello was transported to a burn center in critical condition. Four officers also suffered minor injuries from exposure to the fire.

The self-described investigative researcher arrived in New York City earlier in the week and began protesting in front of the courthouse, criticizing both Republican and Democrat politicians. His family was unaware he had traveled to the city.

A police official said Friday afternoon that it "appears he did post something about this event online prior to the incident."

"This extreme act of protest is to draw attention to an urgent and important discovery: We are victims of a totalitarian con, and our own government (along with many of their allies) is about to hit us with an apocalyptic fascist world coup," Azzarello wrote in a manifesto on the Substack page.

TRUMP HUSH MONEY TRIAL: MEET THE JURORS WHO WILL HEAR BRAGG'S CASE AGAINST THE 2024 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

The park was open to the public at the time of the incident and Azzarello did not breach any security protocols, police said.

Azzarello had three prior arrests across several days in Florida in August of last year, including for disturbing the peace and damage to property.

His behavior leading to the arrests allegedly included tossing a glass of wine at former President Bill Clinton's autograph on a wall protected by a frame inside the lobby of a hotel and, just two days later, stripping down to his boxers and yelling at customers at the same hotel.

After his third arrest, Florida police said Azzarello was suicidal.

Florida teen arrested for allegedly pointing laser at sheriff's helicopter: 'He's blinding our pilot'

A 13-year-old Florida boy is charged with a felony after allegedly pointing a laser at a sheriff's department helicopter.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said the helicopter was in the sky around 12:30 a.m. Thursday in the area of 7th Street Northwest and 11th Avenue in Largo, when a green laser lighting device was pointed at the aircraft.

Deputies in the helicopter maintained a visual of the suspect and directed deputies on the ground to the suspect's location.

"Get up and get somebody on this gentleman. He's blinding our pilot," a deputy in the helicopter is heard saying in video released by the sheriff's office.

Body camera video then shows deputies on the ground locating the young teen, who reportedly admitted to illuminating the helicopter with a laser lighting device. Deputies found a flare gun with a mounted green laser in his jacket.

Deputies said the teenager told them he intentionally aimed the laser at the helicopter because he was bored.

When he was in the back of a squad car, the boy was heard telling deputies, "I didn't know it was a police helicopter."

The boy was arrested and charged with felony misuse of a laser lighting device. He was taken to the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center.

According to Florida statute, it is a third-degree felony for any person to knowingly and willfully shine, point or focus the beam of a laser lighting device on an individual operating a motor vehicle, vessel or aircraft.

The incident remains under investigation.

'We do not have a comment': White House refuses to address Middle East unrest, defers to State Dept.

On April 20, 2024

White House Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre decRead more

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refused to comment on the Biden administration's response, particularly a lack thereof, escalating tensions in the Middle East during her Friday morning press briefing.

"I know there's a lot of interest in reports from the Middle East overnight. And we understand that, we get that. I'm going to see it now, though. I know you will all certainly ask me about it. That we do not have any comment on the reports at this time. Obviously, you all heard from Secretary Blinken earlier this morning," Jean-Pierre said.

Jean-Pierre added that President Biden is kept in the loop and up-to-date on everything happening with unrest in the Middle East.

This comes after Israel carried out limited strikes on Iran early Friday in retaliation for Tehran firing a barrage of missiles and drones at Israel last Saturday.

IRANIAN PRESIDENT MAKES NO MENTION OF ISRAELI STRIKE DESPITE THREATENING COMPLETE DESTRUCTION

Fox News confirmed there have been explosions in Iran's Isfahan province, which is where Natanz, one of Iran's nuclear facilities, is located.

Jean-Pierre said the White House does not want to see conflict escalate in the Middle East.

"We have been very, very clear from the beginning that we do not want to see this conflict escalate. We continue to consult with our allies and partners, including in the region, obviously, and to reduce further risk of escalation in the region. And that's a sentiment that was expressed in the G-7 Foreign Ministry's joint statement that went out this morning," Jean-Pierre said. "You heard that now, obviously, from Secretary Blinken, who was part of that meeting. I'm just going to be super mindful. I'm not going to speculate or speak to any of the reportings that are out there at this time."

When asked whether the U.S. was informed by the Israelis ahead of the counter strike, Jean-Pierre still declined to comment.

"I'm not going to speak to our diplomatic conversations," Jean-Pierre stated.

She also declined to answer if the U.S. has leverage in the Middle East after being questioned about President Biden's response of "don't" to any Iranian retaliation.

ISRAEL STRIKES SITE IN IRAN IN RETALIATION FOR WEEKEND ASSAULT: SOURCE

"I know this is not going to be satisfying. I'm not going to speak to any of the reports out there. I'm just not going to do that, not going to speculate. I will say, you've heard this from my NSE colleagues, and you've heard this from many of us here at The White House. The president and the prime minister have a long-standing relationship that goes decades, decades," Jean-Pierre said.

"Because of that long-standing relationship, they are able to speak very honestly with each other and have difficult conversations when it's necessary. That is the type of friendship that they have. I'm just not going to speak to any of the events that's been reported."

The United States has denied any involvement in the strike, having pleaded with Israel for days to respond with restraint against Iranian strikes.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, when asked about Israel's strikes on Iran on Friday morning, said, "I'm not going to speak to that except to say that the United States has not been involved in any offensive operations."

"What we're focused on, what the G7 is focused on, and again, it's reflected in our statement and in our conversation, is our work to de-escalate tensions, to de-escalate from any potential conflict. You saw Israel on the receiving end of an unprecedented attack," he added. "But our focus has been on, of course, making sure that Israel can effectively defend itself, but also de-escalating tensions, avoiding conflict."

REPUBLICANS SLAM BIDEN’S ‘DON’T’ DETERRENCE: ‘EVERY TIME HE SAYS DON’T, THEY DO’

Iranian state media has also reportedly downplayed Friday’s strikes, those of which a well-placed military source told Fox News that those strikes were "limited."

"The explosion this morning in the sky of Isfahan was related to the shooting of air defense systems at a suspicious object that did not cause any damage," according to Iranian army commander Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi in a report by the Associated Press.

A senior Iranian official reportedly told Reuters on Friday that Tehran has no immediate plans to strike back.

Israel and its government have remained relatively quiet leading up to, and following, the retaliatory strike on Iran.

"Israel will do whatever it needs to defend itself," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement before the Israeli strike. "[Foreign leaders] have all sorts of suggestions and advice. I appreciate that. But I want to be clear: Our decisions we will make ourselves."

Former Israel Defense Forces spokesman Jonathan Conricus tweeted that following the strike, and while Iran appears to downplay the strike, he "think[s] they've gotten the message."

Senate passes FISA surveillance tool renewal minutes after midnight deadline

On April 20, 2024

The Senate passed FISA Section 702 renewal on FridRead more

Roughly 40 minutes after it lapsed, the Senate voted to pass a renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which serves as a critical tool used by the government to gather intelligence on foreign subjects using the compelled assistance of electronic communication service providers.

The upper chamber voted 60-34 to pass the re-authorization. The provision lapsed for less than an hour at midnight on Friday, and if the renewal hadn't passed soon after, the expiration would have meant companies would not be forced to comply with the government's requests for surveillance aid under the bill.

Without the FISA section's re-authorization, the government would be required to seek a warrant to compel any such assistance, which is a process that can span extended periods of time.

The measure now heads to President Biden's desk for his signature.

SENATE PUSHES FORWARD FISA SURVEILLANCE BILL AS EXPIRATION LOOMS

"The stakes of such an outcome are grave," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., warned his colleagues in floor remarks Friday afternoon prior to any votes on amendments or the final bill.

"The authorities in question today have, quite literally, been the only defense against would-be national security disasters," he added.

On Thursday, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., claimed the program would not "go dark," as others had suggested, if it was not renewed on time. Instead, Durbin pointed to recent certifications granted by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) that the Justice Department had informed Congress would "ordinarily remain in effect for one year, expiring in April 2025."

GOP LAWMAKERS SLAM BIDEN ADMINISTRATION'S NEW TITLE IX PROTECTIONS FOR 'GENDER IDENTITY'

However, the DOJ cautioned Congress against allowing this knowledge to slow down the Section 702 renewal process in a letter earlier this month, as companies "are likely to stop or reduce cooperation with the legal process they receive."

The DOJ further noted that this occurred during a previous surveillance measure lapse.

This warning was reiterated by McConnell on Friday, who said, "It will be up to the government to play a slow and painstaking game of whack-a-mole in court against an army of the most sophisticated lawyers in the country."

REPUBLICANS ACCUSE BIDEN, SCHUMER OF EMBOLDENING IRAN PRIOR TO ATTACK ON ISRAEL

"And in the meantime, actionable intelligence will pass us right by," he predicted.

By around 6:00 p.m. on Friday, it seemed unlikely that the Section 702 FISA re-authorization would be voted on until next week, as several senators were unwilling to yield their debate time and sought votes on their various amendments to the measure.

However, around 8:00 p.m., senators appeared to come to an agreement on amendment votes and debate time, clearing the way for an expedited voting process.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., revealed the compromise made my senators on the floor, announcing several roll call votes would take place. "All day long, we persisted and persisted and persisted in hopes of reaching a breakthrough, and I am glad we got it done," he said, noting that there had been "great doubt" it would be accomplished.

"We finally got the Senate to agree to take votes to address serious problems with the FISA expansion and 702 reauthorization passed by the House," Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, wrote on X.

Bipartisan coalitions had grown on both sides of Section 702 renewal, with some arguing that the provision is a vital national security necessity, and others sounding the alarm about what they believe to be violations of constitutional protections.

Amendments from Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., Roger Marshall, R-Kan., Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Josh Hawley, R-Mo., Lee and Durbin were voted on ahead of the final bill's consideration. "We cannot continue sacrificing our freedoms in the name of security. Rather than reining in FISA overreach, RISAA expands it dramatically," Paul said prior to votes on his amendments, which required 60 supporters to pass. "I urge my colleagues to support meaningful reforms that protect both national security and civil liberties."

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., spoke against the consideration of amendments to the bill, citing the fast approaching deadline. If any amendments to the measure were passed in the Senate, the bill would be sent back to the House, where they would once again need to approve it.

All of the amendments failed to garner enough votes for passage, and thus were not added to the bill.

"Allowing FISA to expire would have been dangerous," Schumer remarked prior to the votes.

NY AG Letitia James asks judge to void Trump's $175M bond in civil fraud case

New York Attorney General Letitia James is pushing the judge in former President Donald Trump's civil fraud case to void the $175 million bond that Trump previously posted to appeal his New York civil lawsuit.

In her 26-page filing obtained by Fox News Digital, James questions whether the insurance company has sufficient funds to back it up.

Trump’s bond was posted by California-based Knight Specialty Insurance Company (KSIC), but James argued that the insurer was "not authorized" to write business in New York, stating it is a small insurer that is not authorized to write business in New York and is not regulated by the state’s insurance department, had never before written a surety bond in New York or in the prior two years in any other jurisdiction, and has a total policyholder surplus of just $138 million.

The company has a total policyholder surplus of just $138 million, the filing states. According to New York state law, smaller businesses like KSIC are not permitted to expose themselves to liabilities, like a bond, or any potential loss greater than 10 percent of their surplus.

"Based on KSIC’s policyholder surplus in its most recent annual financial statement of $138,441,671, the limitation of loss on any one risk that KSIC is permitted to write is $13.8 million," the lawyers wrote. "The face amount of the bond exceeds this limitation by $161.2 million."

James also wrote in the filing that "KSIC is not qualified to act as the surety under this standard because its management has been found by federal authorities to have operated affiliated companies within KSIC’s holding company structure in violation of federal law on multiple occasions within the past several years."

"KSIC does not now have an exclusive right to control the account and will not obtain such control unless and until it exercises a right to do so on two days' notice," the filing read.

James also wrote that the Court should not rely on KSIC’s financial summary attached to the bond as evidence that KSIC has sufficient capacity to justify writing a $175 million bond.

"That is because KSIC sends 100% of its retained insurance risk to affiliates in the Cayman Islands, where lax regulations allow KSIC to use this risk transfer to reduce the liabilities it carries on its books in a way that artificially bolsters its surplus, a practice New York regulators have dubbed "shadow insurance" and about which they have sounded the alarm," the filing read.

For these reasons, James writes that the Court should deny the Motion and require Defendants to post a replacement undertaking within seven days of the Court’s ruling.

NY AG LETITIA JAMES BOOED AT FDNY CEREMONY WITH CHANTS OF 'TRUMP! TRUMP! TRUMP!'

In September, Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that Trump and the Trump Organization had committed fraud while building a real estate empire by deceiving banks, insurers and others by overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth on paperwork used in making deals and securing financing.

The judge also prohibited Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation or legal entity in New York for two years.

The former president has repeatedly slammed the case against him and denied any wrongdoing, calling it a "witch hunt."

James brought the lawsuit against Trump, accusing Trump and the Trump Organization of fraudulent business practices. James claimed Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric, as well as his associates and businesses, committed "numerous acts of fraud and misrepresentation" on their financial statements.

Trump has pleaded not guilty on all counts.

SEAN HANNITY: Biden is the 'biggest loser' amid apparent Israeli strikes on Iran

"Hannity" host Sean Hannity argues the wRead more

Fox News host Sean Hannity decries President Biden's "don't" policy regarding Israel and Iran on "Hannity."

SEAN HANNITY: Without a doubt, the biggest loser from last night to today was Joe Biden. Now, late last week, you might recall when the Islamic Republic of Iran was about to strike Israel, Biden politely told the mullahs in Iran: "Don't." And then he shuffled off to the beach.

ISRAEL HITS IRAN WITH 'LIMITED' STRIKES DESPITE WHITE HOUSE'S REPORTED OPPOSITION

The very next day, Iran — they attacked Israel; 170 drone strikes, more than 30 cruise missiles, 120 ballistic missiles. Ninety-nine percent of them were stopped. They never landed at their target. Now, a few days later, when Israel was planning their response, Biden once again uttered his favorite phrase: "Don't."

This time, he was telling Prime Minister Netanyahu, don't respond, give Iran a pass. Now Israel then disregarded Biden, thankfully, and they went ahead with last night's targeted attack and reportedly keeping Joe out of the loop — wisely so — until the last minute. Now the world simply has no respect for Joe Biden. That's why he is the biggest loser. Nobody listens to him, nobody cares what he has to say, nobody thinks he even knows what day of the week it is. And just to keep track, Biden's one-word foreign policy. I guess we can call it the Biden doctrine, the "don't" doctrine, is disregarded by our enemies, it is disregarded by our allies, and a few weeks ago, well the Houthi rebels, you might recall, they ignored Biden's "don't" and continued to attack cargo ships.

A 13-year-old Pennsylvania middle school student is accused of launching an unprovoked attack against a classmate this week, Upper Gwynedd Police confirmed to Fox News Digital.

The student allegedly came up behind the 12-year-old victim in the cafeteria on Wednesday and started violently hitting her on the head with a Stanley cup, FOX 29 reported.

Surveillance video of the incident viewed by FOX 29 showed the student’s head bleeding. She was taken to a hospital after the alleged assault with serious injuries.

Pennbrook Middle School parent Sarah Batory told FOX 29 her son witnessed the alleged attack and texted her about it.

JENNIFER AND JAMES CRUMBLEY SENTENCED IN SON'S MICHIGAN SCHOOL SHOOTING

"‘Mom, I’m scared,’" she said of his text. "I can’t even tell you what it’s like to get a text message like that when your kid’s at school."

She added, "He’s been a mess ever since. I just feel like there had to be multiple failures along the way for this to happen."

Another mother said she had previously reported the student, who could face charges over the incident, to school counselors because the 13-year-old had threatened her daughter.

"If it were taken serious, by multiple complaints, that little girl would’ve been in school today." She added that her daughter is "traumatized."

School officials sent a note to parents on Wednesday night, saying that resources would be available to students who witnessed the incident and that the principal planned to meet with the students Thursday to discuss the incident.

Fox News host Jesse Watters reacts to President Biden suggesting his uncle was eaten by cannibals on "Jesse Watters Primetime."

WHITE HOUSE DEFENDS BIDEN'S CLAIM HIS UNCLE WAS EATEN BY CANNIBALS: ‘WE SHOULD NOT MAKE JOKES’

JESSE WATTERS: This New York trial is going to last two months. That's two months with Trump taken off the [campaign] trail. And if he says the Biden donating judge or the lying star witness or the crazy DA's corrupt, he violates the gag order and gets jailed. Biden can spew hoaxes, plagiarize Michael Rockefeller and Trump can't say a thing or go anywhere except on Wednesdays and on weekends. And with advantages like that, you'd think Biden would be cruising to re-election. Wrong. Biden world is trying to skip out on the debates. his buddy David Frum in The Atlantic says, "The Constitution is not debatable. The president does not participate in forums with a person under criminal indictment for his attempt to overthrow the Constitution."

Jail your rival, duck debates to save democracy. You know the real reason Biden doesn't want a debate? Because Trump is going to say your uncle was eaten by cannibals, huh Joe?

Anti-Israel Columbia student protesters stonewall, directing Fox News reporter to 'media team'

Anti-Israel protesters at Columbia University in NRead more

When Fox News correspondent CB Cotton attempted to interview some of the anti-Israel protesters milling about on Columbia University's campus in Upper Manhattan, she was confronted and told to speak with an unidentified "media team."

Cotton, who said she was permitted to film on campus by Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, asked the protesters to elaborate on their demands to no avail.

Reporting on "The Ingraham Angle," Cotton told guest host Pete Hegseth she wanted to attempt to get live feedback from protesters, and approached some students in the crowd, and began speaking with a young woman wearing a keffiyeh and a facemask.

ANTI-ISRAEL PROTESTERS HEARD SHOUTING ‘WE ARE ALL HAMAS, PIG’

As she began to ask them questions, another student approached and interrupted.

"We have, like, a media team if you're interested in talking to people," said the student, who was also wearing a headscarf.

When Cotton replied that other broadcast journalists were present, the student who interrupted the interview said she would direct her to the "media team" under the stipulation that the Fox News cameraman would stop recording.

"Well, we just want to talk to you all about your demands for the university," Cotton said.

"OK, yeah, we do have a press team," the second student replied.

IRANIAN-AMERICAN LAWYER WHOSE RESPONSE TO ANTI-ISRAEL PROTESTS WENT VIRAL PREDICTS NEW WORLD WAR

When Cotton indicated the Columbia Journalism school had welcomed Fox News in what was referred to as a "liberated zone," the student expressed surprise that the administration would speak on behalf of the protesting students.

"I will totally have that conversation with [Cotton] — I would appreciate your respect… " she continued before another student said, "Let's walk away for a second."

At that point, Cotton turned back to address Hegseth.

"[T]hey're very selective about who they allow into this 'liberated zone.' There are other cameras in there right now. We can see those cameras, but again, our camera is not allowed in," she said.

Hegseth noted how the students covered their faces when the camera approached.

Cotton later said that students unaffiliated with the protests have found them a distraction from typical campus life. Demonstrating students also recently pitched tents in the outdoor commons, but were met Thursday with pushback from law enforcement, which arrested about 100 protesters with the blessing of Columbia President Minouche Shafik, according to the New York Post.

According to an earlier Fox News report, the campus protesters have had to show identification to prove they should be on campus, as New York Post columnist and part-time Columbia student Rikki Schlott said on "Your World."

That, Schlott said, has led to a difference between student protests and more raucous protests occurring in the rest of Morningside Heights.

Throughout the day Friday, Fox News aired clips from the protests, including video of demonstrators near a food cart on what appeared to be Broadway in Morningside Heights, shouting that there should and will be more "October 7s," a reference to Hamas' massacre of Israeli civilians in 2023
