Republicans keep pressure on NPR and controversial CEO amid political bias scandal

On May 8, 2024

Republicans are keeping the pressure on NPR and CPRead more

Congressional Republicans are applying pressure to both National Public Broadcasting (NPR) and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) amid NPR's bias scandal.

A series of letters to both entities have been sent from both House and Senate Republicans, requesting action to ensure NPR's integrity and address the allegations of ideological bias made by senior editor Uri Berliner, who has since left the organization.

The House Committee on Energy and Commerce requested NPR CEO Katherine Maher to appear Wednesday for an Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee hearing on the allegations.

"The Committee has concerns about the direction in which NPR may be headed under past and present leadership," Committee Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., wrote.

FLIGHTS FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WITHOUT IDS TARGETED IN FAA BILL AS DEADLINE LOOMS

However, a spokesperson for NPR told Fox News Digital in a statement that Maher would not be joining the subcommittee to testify. She is willing to testify on a different date, the spokesperson added.

"NPR respects the committee and its request and has offered to testify on a date in the near future that works for the committee and Maher," the spokesperson said. "NPR has a previously scheduled and publicly posted all-day meeting of its board of directors on that date, Maher’s first such meeting since she joined NPR just six weeks ago. These meetings are scheduled more than a year in advance.

WHITE HOUSE LOOKS TO CONVINCE AMERICANS OF ‘BIDENOMICS’ WITH KAMALA HARRIS TOUR

"Maher is therefore unable to attend this week’s hearing and has communicated that to the committee and proposed alternate dates. Maher will provide written testimony in her absence," the spokesperson continued.

A spokesperson for the House Energy and Commerce committee told Fox News Digital Maher's choice not to testify on Wednesday "speaks volumes."

WHITE HOUSE LOOKS TO CONVINCE AMERICANS OF ‘BIDENOMICS’ WITH KAMALA HARRIS TOUR

"The chair looks forward to reviewing her thorough and transparent responses to the committee’s letter," the spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation Chairwoman Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., did not say whether she is concerned by the allegations made against NPR or if she would invite Maher to testify in the Senate.

"The chair is focused on getting a five-year reauthorization passed," the spokesperson said, referencing the FAA re-authorization bill that has a deadline of May 10.

CPB has also been the recipient of letters scrutinizing its grant funding to NPR amid the scandal. Both Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Rick Scott, R-Fla., have sent such letters.

ERNST LEADS SENATE GOP DEMANDING BIDEN 'CEASE PLANNING' GAZA REFUGEE ACCEPTANCE

Asked by Fox News Digital for comment on the letters and any concerns the corporation might have over the revelations at NPR, CPB simply replied on Tuesday it "has confirmed receipt of Senator Cruz’s letter and will reply in a timely manner."

The allegations of ideological bias in NPR's newsroom have also led to bills being discussed in both chambers and introduced in the House to cut the organization's funding.

One such attempt by House Freedom Caucus Chair Bob Good, R-Va., would stop NPR from receiving federal funding, while also preventing public radio stations with federal grants from using them to buy content from or pay dues to NPR.

Berliner's scathing essay addressing his concerns with his employer was published roughly one month ago, on April 9. Among other revelations, Berliner discovered that the NPR Washington, D.C., newsroom held zero Republicans, compared to 87 Democrats.

Top 5 moments of Trump trial after 'salacious' Stormy Daniels testimony

On May 8, 2024

Former President Trump's criminal trial reachRead more

The unprecedented criminal trial of former President Trump reached a fever pitch Tuesday with highly anticipated and salacious testimony from adult film actress Stormy Daniels that prompted a motion for a mistrial and a scolding from the judge.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. The charges stem from a years-long investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

The charges are related to alleged payments made ahead of the 2016 presidential election to silence Daniels about an alleged 2006 extramarital affair with Trump.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg must convince the jury that not only did Trump falsify the business records related to alleged hush money payments, but that he did so in furtherance of another crime: conspiracy to promote or prevent election, which is a felony.

NY V TRUMP: JUDGE DENIES MOTION FOR MISTRIAL AMID STORMY DANIELS TESTIMONY

On their own, falsifying business records and conspiracy to promote or prevent election are misdemeanor charges.

Here are the top five moments from Tuesday’s day in court.

Attorneys for Trump objected to prosecutors’ plans to go through the "full details" of the alleged sexual encounter between the pornography actress and Trump.

Trump’s team argued there was no need for the details and further argued that there is an issue with Daniels’ credibility by pointing to her initial denial of any alleged encounter in 2018.

Prosecutors told Judge Juan Merchan that they would "not go into details of genitalia."

Merchan sided with prosecutors, and Daniels promptly took the stand.

Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, told prosecutors she prefers to be referred to as Stormy Daniels. She said she grew up in a low-income family in Louisiana and was raised by her mother after her parents divorced.

Daniels testified that at age 17 she began erotic dancing for money, and at age 21, she began nude modeling for magazines. She said she then traveled to California to be an extra in an adult film and was offered an adult film contract at age 23.

The adult film actress testified that she met Trump at a celebrity golf tournament in July 2006 in Lake Tahoe. She said that at the time she was under contract at Wicked Pictures, which was a sponsor and had a table at the tournament.

"It was a very brief encounter … players came though … introduced to every player who came through … very brief encounter," Daniels said on the witness stand.

Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger asked what Daniels discussed with Trump. Daniels said it wasn’t very much; she was introduced as a director and said Trump told her that "you must be the smart one."

BRAGG PROSECUTOR LEADING STORMY DANIELS QUESTIONING IN TRUMP TRIAL DONATED TO JOE BIDEN, DEMOCRATS

Daniels said she knew about Trump's then-reality show "The Apprentice" and that he did cameos and commercials. She was 27 at the time and knew Trump was "probably as old or as old as my father," who was 60 at the time.

She said she saw Trump in the gift room and made sure Trump got a copy of a movie called "Three Wishes" and chatted briefly. She said someone came back and asked her if she wanted to have dinner with Trump.

Daniels said that she discussed the invitation to dinner with her then-publicist, recalling that her publicist joked, "I think you should go … what could possibly go wrong?"

The publicist implied it would be good for Daniels’ career, the performer said.

She then testified in detail about the alleged sexual encounter with Trump in a hotel room.

After a brief morning break and a pause in Daniels’ testimony, Merchan told prosecutors that they were going into too much detail during their questioning of her.

"The degree of detail we’re going into is unnecessary," the judge told Manhattan prosecutor Hoffinger and asked her to move things along.

Prior to the break, the prosecution asked Daniels to recount an alleged meeting with Trump at a Lake Tahoe hotel room. Daniels said Trump asked her to dinner after meeting her earlier at the tournament.

Daniels has alleged she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006 and that in 2016 she was paid $130,000 by Trump's ex-lawyer, Michael Cohen, to keep that story from the media.

Trump has denied the affair. Daniels initially denied the affair before changing her story in 2018.

After lunch, Trump’s defense attorneys moved for a mistrial amid Daniels’ testimony.

Defense attorney Todd Blanche, after the court's lunch break, told Merchan that Daniels' testimony Tuesday morning was prejudicial.

Merchan said a mistrial was not warranted and that he was doing everything he could to control the witness, including once objecting to Daniels' testimony himself.

"I agree that it would have been better if some of these things had been left unsaid," Merchan said.

Blanche said the prosecution is trying to inflame the jury with Daniels’ testimony, including with evidence that he said does not matter. Blanche said it is prejudicial testimony and evidence, saying Daniels has been trying to sell her story about an alleged consensual sexual encounter since 2016.

The defense attorney said Daniels’ testimony on Tuesday was about "consent and danger" and that was "not the story that she was selling in 2016." He also said Daniels was testifying about consent, and that kind of testimony "makes it impossible to come back from." Blanche said the defense "objected as best we could, but she was able to say what she said."

He also questioned how the defense could "come back from this" in a way that could be "fair" to Trump.

NY V TRUMP TO RESUME AFTER FORMER PRESIDENT THREATENED WITH JAIL, TOLD TRIAL TO LAST AT LEAST 2 MORE WEEKS

"We believe there should be a mistrial," he said, "or that this witness’ testimony is excluded and extremely limited."

Blanche said Daniels’ lurid and explosive testimony "has nothing to do with this case" and is "totally irrelevant."

He also noted that what Daniels said was "extraordinarily prejudicial testimony" and that there is a "high risk of the jury not being able to focus on the charged conduct."

But Hoffinger said the defense was fully briefed on Daniels' testimony in the motions prior to trial and argued that Daniels' testimony was probative to Trump's intent. Hoffinger said the defense is attacking Daniels' credibility and argued there is "no basis for this."

During the break, the former president and 2024 Republican presumptive presidential nominee posted to his Truth Social account without naming Daniels.

"THE PROSECUTION, WHICH HAS NO CASE, HAS GONE TOO FAR," he posted. "MISTRIAL!"

During cross-examination by Trump defense attorney Susan Necheles, Daniels acknowledged that her story was worth a significant amount of money in 2016.

When asked if Daniels tried to extort money from Trump, Daniels said, "False."

The adult film star testified that she saw 2016 as an opportunity to get her story out and benefit financially.

For the first time, Daniels confirmed that she wanted to "get the story out and make some money." She was ultimately paid $130,000 by ex-Trump attorney Cohen.

Daniels, in late 2018, published a book called "Full Disclosure."

After hours of listening to Daniels make salacious allegations on the stand about an alleged sexual encounter, which he has denied, Trump spoke to reporters outside the courtroom.

Merchan imposed a gag order on the former president, a gag order that he has ruled Trump to have violated at least 10 times.

Trump is barred from speaking about witnesses with regard to their potential participation or about counsel in the case – other than Bragg – or about court staff, DA staff or family members of staff.

NY V TRUMP: JUDGE THREATENS JAIL TIME FOR 'POSSIBLY THE NEXT PRESIDENT' FOR FUTURE GAG ORDER VIOLATIONS

On Monday, Trump was fined another $1,000, bringing the total to $10,000 in gag order violation fines.

Merchan threatened Trump with jail time if he makes future violations.

"The last thing I want to consider is jail," Merchan said Monday. "You are [the] former president and possibly the next president."

NY V. TRUMP: MAYOR ADAMS SAYS RIKERS ISLAND IS 'PREPARED' IF TRUMP IS SENTENCED TO JAIL

Trump, after Daniels' testimony, followed the gag order and did not mention Stormy Daniels by name or reference her testimony.

"This was a very big day, a very revealing day as you'll see their case is totally falling apart," Trump said.

"They have nothing on books and records and even something that should bear very little relationship to the case is just a disaster ... for the Soros-backed DA," he continued.

"This whole case is just a disaster," Trump said.

Trump lamented that the trial is preventing him, the presumptive GOP nominee for the 2024 presidential election, from being on the campaign trail.

"I'm stuck. I'm here instead of being in Georgia, instead of being in New Hampshire, instead of being in Wisconsin and all the different states that we wanted to be, and we're not able to be there because we're stuck in this trial, which everyone knows is a hoax," he said.

'Shameful': GOP lawmaker shreds 'AWOL' Biden for throwing Jews 'under the bus' amid anti-Israel protests

On May 8, 2024

Rep. Chris Smith blasted President Biden's leRead more

A Republican lawmaker from New Jersey praised Speaker Mike Johnson’s decision to visit Columbia University in response to the anti-Israel protests on campus and blasted President Biden’s leadership on the issue that has spread to campuses nationwide.

"October 7th should have been the absolute wake-up call as to what Hamas and company are all about, Iran too, so Speaker Johnson did a magnificent job,"Smith told Fox News Digital this week about Speaker Johnson’s visit to Columbia’s campus contrasted with President Biden’s leadership on the issue.

"Not so with the president. The president has been nowhere to be found. He's been AWOL. He's been enabling. He's so worried about losing Dearborn, Michigan votes that he has thrown Jews and the Israeli people under the bus and I think it's shameful. Shameful. And he needs to get his voice and speak out boldly. Zero tolerance for antisemitism."

Michigan is seen by many as a "must win" state for Biden this November after he narrowly won there by less than 3 points. In recent months, a growing number of Palestinians in Dearborn, Michigan and other places in the state have suggested they will drop their support of him if he continues to support Israel's military operations in Gaza.

ANTI-ISRAEL AGITATORS AT MIT TAKE DOWN BARRIER, RETAKE CAMPUS ENCAMPMENT AFTER POLICE CLEARED IT

"We can hope but I think it's hope that's probably not going to happen," Smith said when asked if he believes Biden should visit one of the many college campuses experiencing anti-Israel protests.

Fox News Digital asked Smith what he hopes to see the Biden administration do going forward.

"To speak out on behalf of the Israelis, to support the Israelis in their all-out effort to rid themselves of the Hamas cancer. Hamas, again, is committed to one thing, killing Jews. Even when you read the Hamas charter it says don't enter into peace conferences. They want to kill. They want to commit genocide and that's what they are in the process of doing. That's what Iran is all about under its misguided leadership."

"I thought, here we go again," Smith told Fox News Digital when asked about Columbia University’s recent decision to cancel its graduation due to the anti-Israel protests that led to violence, harassment, and arrests on its campus in recent weeks.

"People who are committed, that is to say, the Students for Free Palestine and others, to Hamas, which is a terrorist organization and a organization that promotes genocide against Jews and Israel," Smith said. "To think that they've now canceled the graduation exercises. The fact that they have, in my opinion, not just there, but throughout the country, including at Rutgers in my state, they're spewing a creed of hatred and antisemitism that puts students at risk and raises the prospects of violence, to a very, very high level."

ISRAELI TROOPS GAIN OPERATIONAL CONTROL OF GAZAN SIDE OF RAFAH CROSSING, IDF SAYS

Smith visited Rutgers University in his home state of New Jersey last week in response to an anti-Israel protest on that campus where students listed demands including the schools divestment from Israeli entities.

"We just had a situation at Rutgers where there was another encampment like we're seeing all over," Smith explained. "It's all organized. It's nothing sporadic about this. It's all organized. And they made ten demands. They called it requests of the administration and we're told that eight of those requests have already been given and two of them are under serious consideration."

Smith said divestment is one of the demands being considered by Rutgers and he believes that BDS is simply an effort to "delegitimize Israel" and turn it into a "pauper state."

"It's a terrible, terrible movement and yet Rutgers has said, well, let's talk about it," Smith continued.  "They have agreed to set up this cultural center which I think will become potentially a haven for antisemitic hatred. The president is asked to apologize for the Israeli genocide. He ought to be asking Hamas and the students to apologize for supporting, beginning on October 7th but also before that and now after that, a genocidal regime."

Biden has been heavily criticized for his response to the anti-Israel protests across the country and many took issue with his decisions to wait 9 days before giving an on-camera comment and declining to send in the National Guard to restore order.

"So let me be clear," Biden said last week. "Violent protest is not protected. Peaceful protest is. It's against the law when violence occurs. Destroying property is not a peaceful protest. It's against the law. Vandalism. Trespassing. Breaking windows. Shutting down campuses. Forcing the cancelation of classes and graduations. None of this is a peaceful protest. Threatening people. Intimidating people. Instilling fear in people is not peaceful protest. It's against the law."

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment.

Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman's kids make rare appearance in first photo with dad since 2009: Their lives now

Tom Cruise enjoyed a rare public night out with his two older children.

The actor attended the Tampa Bay Lightning versus Florida Panthers NHL game with Isabella, 31, and Connor, 29 — his children he shares with ex-wife Nicole Kidman — in December. The outing marks the first time the trio have been spotted together since 2009.

In a photo posted by former NFL player Derrick Brooks, Cruise is seen with his arm around Brooks, as Connor gives a thumbs up. In the back of the group photo, Isabella is seen smiling.

NICOLE KIDMAN OPENS UP ABOUT ADOPTED KIDS WITH EX TOM CRUISE: 'I’M VERY PRIVATE ABOUT THAT'

"Good Evening, Wow, look who stopped by my office before our @tblightning game tonight!" Brooks wrote on Instagram. "@tomcruise. I was a little star struck but played it cool and He said he was too!"

For much of their adult life, Connor and Isabella — who were both adopted by Kidman and Cruise — have remained out of the spotlight. Little is known about their private lives except for what they choose to post online.

According to Isabella's website, the artist has been "drawing ever since her wee hands could pick up a pen. Since that point in time she’s been evolving in her arts."

"Her go-to medium was pen and paper for most of her life. However, she is now venturing into other formats and mediums. Including digital. Which has been a bit of a game changer in her opinion."

As for Isabella's younger brother, Connor is an avid golfer, deep sea fisher and owner of Connor's Meatshack in Florida.

Both Isabella and Connor are members of the Church of Scientology, like their father.

In 2018, Kidman — who has not been photographed with her children in years — opened up about their decision to practice Scientology.

"They are able to make their own decisions," Kidman — who also shares daughters Sunday Rose,15, and Faith Margaret,13, with husband Keith Urban — told Australia's Who Magazine. "They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them. And I am an example of that tolerance, and that’s what I believe, that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here."

"I'm very private about all that," she added about disclosing information about her relationships with her children. "I have to protect all those relationships. I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it's what my purpose is."

It seems Cruise shares the same sentiment.

In 2010, he opened up to Esquire about becoming a dad.

"I remember that first night, just staring at Bella. I was checking her every second, just looking at her, feeling that immediate bond. I was probably looking at her so much that I was keeping her up," he said. "I made a promise to her: All I can do is the best I can. But I’m not going to say I'm going to do something and then not do it."

"If I tell you we’re going to have ice cream on Friday night, we’re going to have ice cream on Friday night," he continued. "If I say I’m going to take your call anytime you need me, and I’m in the middle of something on the set, my world is going to stop for you. I made that promise to all of my kids."

In 2012, Isabella made a rare comment about her mom, telling New Idea Magazine, "I love mom. She’s my mom. She’s great. I see her sometimes and I speak to her. We’re a very close family. I love all of our family."

While it's unknown what the family dynamic looks like these days, it's evident the kids support both their mom and dad and vice versa.

Just last week, Isabella liked an Instagram post in which Kidman shared that she was the recipient of the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award

Mica Miller 911 call reveals final moments before her death as SC authorities challenge 'conspiracy theories'

This story discusses suicide. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

North Carolina authorities on Tuesday released a 911 call and comprehensive timeline of South Carolina woman Mica Miller's last moments leading up to her death by suicide April 27.

Robeson County Medical Examiner Richard Johnson ruled Miller died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after authorities found her in Lumber River State Park, about an hour's drive from the Millers' hometown of Myrtle Beach, April 27.

"This incident has garnered much attention from across the Carolinas and beyond. I want to assure everyone that a very methodical investigation was conducted by our Criminal Investigations Team and Crime Scene Investigative Team," Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said in a statement Tuesday. "Unfortunately, rumors and conspiracy theories were spreading quickly, and assumptions were being made.

DEATH OF SOUTH CAROLINA PASTOR'S WIFE UNDER INVESTIGATION AS HER FAMILY WARNS OF 'FALSE' STORIES

"However, in the end, we must make decisions based on the facts and evidence that has been gathered. While I know it’s not what many people wanted to hear, the evidence is quite clear and compelling, and we are as saddened as anyone that this occurred. There are many factors that we have reviewed that occurred over an extended period of time that are probably related to the reason for this investigation, but in the end, sadly, a tragic decision was made by Mica that ended her life."

Miller, 30, was married to a pastor named John-Paul Miller, the lead preacher at a congregation called Solid Rock at Market Common in Myrtle Beach. John-Paul has reportedly been released from ministry duties at the church, where he announced his wife's suicide April 28, the day after her death, ABC 15 reported.

Speculation surrounding the circumstances of Mica's death began circulating on social media, particularly because Mica was in the process of formally separating from her husband. She had filed three "separate support and maintenance" requests since last year, the latest filed April 16. Separate support and maintenance allows one spouse to receive court-ordered support from another spouse without officially divorcing.

But Robeson County Sheriff's Office investigators determined Miller "and a female that he is allegedly romantically involved with" were not in Robeson County at the time of Mica's death.

"Investigators learned through interviews that John Paul Miller was at an athletic event in Charleston on the day of Mica Miller’s death. John Miller’s vehicle was observed traveling on Hwy 17 Bypass, in Horry County at 2:22 pm on April 27, 2024," the sheriff's office said in a press release. "The investigation confirmed that John Miller was accompanied while traveling to and from the event in Charleston, SC."

COLORADO DENTIST ACCUSED OF POISONING WIFE TRIED TO GET FELLOW INMATE TO PLANT FAKE SUICIDE NOTES: POLICE

Investigators also determined that Mica purchased a 9 mm Sig Sauer handgun from a pawn shop on the morning she allegedly died by suicide. Authorities found the gun case and a receipt for the purchase in her vehicle at Lumber River State Park.

They later recovered a 9 mm Sig Sauer handgun where she was found dead, noting the same "serial number on the weapon matched the gun box that was found in Miller’s Honda Accord."

In a 911 call made to Robseon County 2:54 p.m., which was shared by the sheriff's office, Mica can be heard asking a dispatcher if she can track down her location. When the dispatcher says she tracked Mica to the Lumber River State Park, she asked Mica why she wanted her location known.

"Tell me what happened," the dispatcher says.

HUSBAND WHO FOUND BODIES OF WIFE, KIDS IN MURDER-SUICIDE: 'I'M DEAD INSIDE'

"I'm about to kill myself, and I just want my family to know where to find me," Mica can be heard saying.

A friend of Mica says she does not "agree with" the medical examiner's findings that Miller died by suicide.

"It just makes me s[o] mad. I don't believe it's over," Allicia Young told Fox News Digital. "I believe more stuff will come out! It always does."

Young said Mica was "always, so positive, so encouraging," and "supportive."

"I honestly don't think I really ever heard a negative word coming out of her mouth, because that's just the type of person she was," Young said. "She was never afraid to speak out about her faith or even stop and pray for somebody. She was very bold like that."

MISSING DOCTOR FOUND DEAD IN ARKANSAS LAKE COMMITTED SUICIDE, AUTHORITIES SAY

Young, who was a former member of Solid Rock congregation and friends with the Millers through her husband, said John-Paul's sermons often mentioned his wife and her struggles with mental health. The pair apparently met when Mica was just 14 years old in John-Paul's youth group, Young said.

The day after his wife's death, John-Paul's sermon mentioning his wife's suicide rubbed Young the wrong way, too.

"What pastor gets up in less than 24 hours of his wife's passing to still give a sermon and already has a funeral planned for the following week? Nobody does that," she said.

GO HERE FOR MORE TRUE CRIME FROM FOX NEWS DIGITAL

An obituary for Miller states the 30-year-old woman was "energetic, affirming, adventurous, faithful, loving, giving, forgiving, talented, joyous, creative, assertive, bold, determined, authoritative, passionate, hardworking, a risk taker, and so much more."

However, Mica's loved ones on social media are noting one part of the obituary that strikes them as odd: "She would praise her husband after every church service telling him he was the best preacher in the world (even if it wasn’t true). She also told him he was the funniest preacher in the world (even though that wasn’t true either). Mica loved her family soooooooo much."

Young said the pastor mentioned Mica often in his sermons and spoke about women in a generally derogatory manner.

"He always made sure that he told everybody that he had a hot wife and how hot she was, and that every man should go out and find themselves a hot wife," Young said.

The Horry County Clerk's Office confirmed to Fox News Digital that Mica had filed three "separate support and maintenance" requests since last year, the latest filed on April 16. Separate support and maintenance allows one spouse to receive court-ordered support from another spouse without officially divorcing.

Since Mica's death, which has rocked the Myrtle Beach community, her family and friends have been sharing posts on social media with the hashtag "JusticeforMica."

Her sister pleaded with friends on social media to "not listen to false stories being shared about" Mica.

"Mica was a God-fearing, joyful, loving woman who did not deserve the abuse she endured. If you hear anything about this from anyone other than her family please question it, reach out to her siblings or parents," she wrote.

Fox News Digital reached out to John-Paul's Myrtle Beach congregation, Solid Rock at Market Common, for comment but did not immediately hear back. Regina Ward, an attorney representing Mica's family, also did not immediately respond to an inquiry from Fox News Digital.

Biden administration confirms paused shipment of bombs to Israel over opposition to operation in Rafah

The Biden administration has paused shipments of two types of precision bombs to Israel in response to U.S. opposition to Israeli forces' operation in Rafah, according to a U.S. official.

One shipment of 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs the administration says might be used in Rafah has been placed on hold.

"The U.S. position has been that Israel should not launch a major ground operation in Rafah, where more than a million people are sheltering with nowhere else to go," the U.S. official said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

"We have been engaging in a dialogue with Israel in our Strategic Consultative Group format on how they will meet the humanitarian needs of civilians in Rafah, and how to operate differently against Hamas there than they have elsewhere in Gaza," the official continued. "Those discussions are ongoing and have not fully addressed our concerns. As Israeli leaders seemed to approach a decision point on such an operation, we began to carefully review proposed transfers of particular weapons to Israel that might be used in Rafah. This began in April."

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION PUTS HOLD ON US AMMUNITION SHIPMENT TO ISRAEL: REPORT

Following this review, the U.S. decided last week to pause a shipment of 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs, according to the official, who said the administration is "especially focused" on the end-use of the 2,000-pound bombs and "the impact they could have in dense urban settings as we have seen in other parts of Gaza."

A final determination has not yet been made on how to proceed with this shipment.

"For certain other cases at the State Department, including Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits, we are continuing the review," the official said.  None of these cases involve imminent transfers – they are about future transfers."

The official also emphasized that these shipments do not have anything to do with the Israel supplemental appropriations passed last month.

WHITE HOUSE SAYS COMMITMENT TO ISRAEL 'IRONCLAD,' DESPITE REPORT OF SLOW-WALKING MILITARY AID

"All are drawn from previously appropriated funds, some many years ago," the official said. "We are committed to ensuring Israel gets every dollar appropriated in the supplemental. In fact, we just approved the latest tranche of Foreign Military Financing: $827 million worth of weapons and equipment for Israel."

The statement from the U.S. official comes after two Israeli officials told Axios that U.S.-manufactured ammunition to Israel was paused last week for the first time since Hamas' Oct. 7 attack against the Jewish State.

On Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces announced that it had gained operational control of the Gazan side of the Rafah Crossing after troops began a "precise counterterrorism operation" in eastern Rafah aimed at killing Hamas terrorists and dismantling "Hamas terrorist infrastructure within specific areas of eastern Rafah."

DA Bragg hoped Stormy Daniels would save Trump case, but something else happened

On May 8, 2024

The folly of DA Alvin Bragg’s prosecution was furtRead more

If you thought the Manhattan criminal trial of former President Donald Trump couldn’t devolve into more ridiculousness, it did on Tuesday.

The folly of DA Alvin Bragg’s prosecution was further exposed when the notorious ex-porn star, Stormy Daniels, sashayed to the witness stand. Not unexpectedly, she offered a tutorial on her notorious vocation —sex.

Her real name is Stephanie Clifford, but her nom de plume is what made her famous in the underworld of adult erotica. In court, she confirmed starring in "40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up," among other pornography lore. That may have been titillating, but was there really a point? Like most of her testimony, no. Let’s review.

TRUMP TRIAL JUDGE COMPARED TO 'CORRUPT DICTATORSHIPS' AS STORMY DANIELS UNLEASHES SALACIOUS TESTIMONY

Daniels claims to have had a tryst with Trump 18 years ago, which he denies. She denied it, too, in writing… but only after squeezing $130,000 from Trump when he ran for president a decade later by promising to go public. Her demands and threats intensified as the election drew near. Extortion?  Sure looks like it. But Trump is on trial, not Daniels. Go figure.

Daniels worked overtime to profit financially off of her fleeting association with Trump and to appropriate his MAGA slogan. She headlined strip club appearances that she dubbed, "Make America Horny Again."  She published a tawdry tell-all book titled, "Full Disclosure," replete with descriptions of male genitalia. She vented her disappointment, if not anger, that Trump refused to feature her in his popular reality television show, "The Apprentice."

On the stand, Daniels told the jury a salacious tale of meeting Trump privately for dinner and having sex with him only once. Curiously, she now claims she blacked out. Is any of it the truth? It doesn’t matter. It’s utterly immaterial to the case. Moreover, Daniels has a nasty habit of peddling inconsistent narratives about the purported episode. At one point, she reversed course and recanted her signed statement repudiating the affair.  Yet, on the stand she admitted faking her own signature.

Adopting the mantle of an innocent, Daniels assured the jury that she didn’t care about the money; she only wanted to get her story about Trump out to the public. Really? Then why did she sell her story to Trump’s lawyer for a load of cash in exchange for remaining silent? That one statement alone from the mouth of the witness completely undermined any semblance of credibility. But that’s not all. Daniels confirmed that she instructed her manager to "get the story out and make some money!"

LIVE UPDATES: NY V TRUMP TRIAL RESUMES WITH WITNESS TESTIMONY AFTER JUDGE MERCHAN THREATENS TRUMP WITH JAIL TIME

It’s important to note that Daniels has multiple motives to lie.  Beyond wanting to advance her career, cashing in, and trying to justify the payola she pocketed in an apparent blackmail scheme, she lost her quixotic defamation lawsuit against Trump and was ordered by the courts to pay him more than half a million dollars in legal fees —a sum she still indignantly refuses to pay.

Daniels responded by tweeting, "I will go to jail before I pay a penny." No objection here.

Bragg’s team of unscrupulous prosecutors called this untrustworthy witness for only one purpose: to slime Trump. That’s obvious. Because none of what she had to say on the stand Tuesday has anything to do with the charges against Trump —charges that don’t even constitute crimes under the law.

BRAGG PROSECUTOR LEADING STORMY DANIELS QUESTIONING IN TRUMP TRIAL DONATED TO BIDEN, DEMOCRATS

The indictment accuses Trump of falsifying business records.  Forget that there was nothing false about them. They were legal payments in exchange for a legal document that was negotiated by two lawyers and booked as "legal expenses" because that is what they were. The Trump Organization accountant who handled it corroborated it when he testified on Monday.

So, how in the world does Daniels fit in to this sordid mess? She doesn’t. She was never privy to the internal accounting of the payments she received from Trump’s then-attorney, Michael Cohen.  She adds nothing to the case except to smear him with humiliating stories about her supposed transient encounter.

NY V TRUMP: JUDGE DENIES MOTION FOR MISTRIAL AMID STORMY DANIELS TESTIMONY

Daniels never spoke to Trump about the payments or the non-disclosure agreement she signed or whether it was intended to help his campaign. She had access to none of the invoices reflecting reimbursements to Cohen. But prosecutors wanted her on the witness stand to drag the accused through the mud. Their goal was to malign and vilify Trump with an irrelevant witness.

Daniels did so with gusto. But under cross-examination she withered like a desert flower, admitting that she despised Trump and called him an "orange turd." Classy. Defense attorney Susan Necheles confronted Daniels with her ever-changing accounts of what really happened with Trump. When it was convenient and lucrative, her story of sex was true. Other times, it was not.

"You have been making money for more than a decade on the story that you had sex with Donald Trump," said Necheles. Yes, but sometimes Daniels omitted the part about being intimate.  "This taught you that if you want to make money off of Trump you better talk about the sex," to which the witness replied, "No, although that does seem to be the case."

Calling Daniels to the stand was wholly unnecessary. Her scheme for money and the payments made was already introduced as evidence through prior witnesses. Instead, with prodding by prosecutors, Daniels gratuitously offered sexually graphic details that would make a sailor blush. At one point, Judge Juan Merchan instructed the jurors to ignore some of the most prurient testimony. That’s like trying to unring the sound of a deafening bell.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION

The decision by Merchan to even allow such inflammatory testimony is so appalling that it prompted Trump’s lawyers to demand a mistrial. But since the judge was instrumental in creating the legal blunder, he naturally denied the motion that will surely be a bright red flag for the defense on appeal.

As I’ve noted in prior columns, relevant evidence must be excluded "if its probative value is outweighed by the danger that its admission would create undue prejudice to a party." (NY Rules of Evidence, 4.06) Here, the prejudice to Trump is manifest and immense, and the testimony itself has almost no probative value whatsoever.

Neither the facts nor the law support Bragg’s anemic case. So, he has taken to defiling Trump in court with the hope that jurors will convict him over a smutty story bereft of criminal wrongdoing.

We are three weeks into this absurd trial, and there is still no evidence that Trump committed any crimes.  No one has testified that the former president was involved in booking the Daniels legal payments as "legal expenses." Prosecutors allege uncharged election crimes that they have no authority to enforce. Only the federal government can do that and chose not to because no crimes were committed.

Bragg manufactured a phony case against a political enemy, and his lieutenants have polluted it with irrelevant, inflammatory, and prejudicial garbage.  The district attorney has made a mockery of fairness and due process. Judge Merchan should have stopped it.  Instead, he has enabled and emboldened a corrupt prosecution.

If Americans care about our system of justice, they should be disgusted with this assault on the rule of law.

Former Army soldier convicted of murdering pregnant soldier on Germany base in 2001

A former Army soldier has been convicted of secondRead more

A former U.S. Army soldier was convicted by a federal jury in Pensacola, Florida, on Monday in the decades-old killing of a pregnant soldier overseas.

Shannon Wilkerson, 43, was found guilty of second-degree murder in the beating and strangling death of 19-year-old Pfc. Amanda Gonzales, the Department of Justice announced on Tuesday.

The crime took place in her barracks room at Fliegerhorst Kaserne – a former Army base in Hanau, Germany – in November 2001.

Her body was found on Nov. 5 after she didn't show up to her job as a cook in the Headquarters Supply Company of the 127th Aviation Support battalion.

US ARMY VETERAN CHARGED IN COLD CASE MURDER OF PREGNANT SOLDIER IN GERMANY

Gonzales was four months pregnant with what Wilkerson believed to be his child when he killed her, said Executive Assistant Director Timothy Langan Jr. of the FBI’s Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch.

"Twenty-two years ago, Shannon Wilkerson brutally murdered Amanda Gonzales, who he believed was pregnant with his child," Langan said in a statement. "Yesterday’s conviction is a testament to our unwavering commitment of pursuing justice for victims of violent crime. Through the collaboration of law enforcement, the FBI and our partners will continue to seek justice for victims, no matter how long it takes."

EX-ARMY SERGEANT CONVICTED IN BRUTAL STABBING DEATH OF SOLDIER IN GEORGIA BARRACKS GETS LIFE IN PRISON

Wilkerson was a soldier at the time of Gonzales' murder, but he was discharged from active duty in 2004, Fox News Digital previously reported.

He was arrested on Feb. 23, 2023, and charged under the Military Extraterritorial Jurisdiction Act, which gives U.S. federal courts jurisdiction over crimes committed outside the country by former servicemembers who are no longer subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the DOJ said.

Wilkerson is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 8 and faces life in prison.

Bill to expand Florida's 'Safe Haven' law now on DeSantis' desk

A bill to expand Florida’s "Safe Haven"Read more

Legislation to expand Florida’s "Safe Haven" policy is now awaiting Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis' signature after passing through the state legislature.

The existing "Safe Haven" law made it legal to surrender unwanted infants, as long as they are given up unharmed to certain drop-off locations, including hospitals and fire stations.

The expanded bill would give women 30 days to drop off the newborn, up from the current seven-day time limit. The bill would also authorize 911 dispatchers to arrange an infant drop-off location in instances where the child's parents do not have transportation available to reach an agency's drop-off location.

DEAD BABY DISCOVERED AT UNIVERSITY OF TAMPA IN FLORIDA

"I think, basically, people were just wanting to give moms more time. And, other states have 30 days, and it's a positive thing, really," A Safe Haven for Newborns CEO Nick Silverio told Fox 13. "[The mother] might be going through postpartum. She might be going through a medical condition that she had delivering the baby… this just gives her more time."

An adoption agency in St. Petersburg, Florida, said this is the perfect time for the expanded law, after the six-week abortion ban took effect in the Sunshine State.

"I think we're going to see with the six-week [abortion] ban, we're going to see an increase. I come from child welfare for over 30 years, and we're going to see an increase in those children coming in for care," Connie Going of Going Adoption and Surrogacy told Fox 13.

DESANTIS TOUTS FLORIDA LAWSUIT SEEKING TO BLOCK BIDEN'S TITLE IX CHANGES

"I think that we're going to see an increase in adoptions," she continued. "I think we're going to see an increase in parenting, which means we as communities have to step up and provide services that support families."

The bill comes after a baby was found dead last week in a garbage can on the campus of the University of Tampa. The mother told police she delivered the baby in her dorm bathroom, where the child briefly cried before dying, court records showed, Fox 13 reported.

The mother initially said she was unaware she was pregnant, but later told police she may have been in denial about not being pregnant and had not had a period in about a year.

GREG GUTFELD: The legacy media is less trusted than week-old tuna salad

"Gutfeld!" panelists discuss how traditiRead more

Yesterday, Politico ran a piece mourning the death of swagger in journalism. The writer Jack Shafer laments that "wounded and limping, doubting its own future, American journalism seems to be losing a quality that carried it through a century and a half of trials: its swagger." Hmm, "wounded and limping." Sounds like they're describing one of Kristi Noem's dogs.

It doesn't end yet!

But Earth to legacy media: You can stop crying now. It's over, and you lost bigly. You're less trusted than week-old tuna salad. Shafer's point is that journalism has become too timid, but his real purpose seems to be a call to action for his fellow reporters to get tougher. Sorry, Brian Stelter can't even do a girl push-up.

Now, Shafer goes on to claim that there are a few approved journalists out there with swagger, but apparently his definition of swagger is writers who despise half the country because, of course, they're all either left or far-left. The article is a bit like listening to your grandfather reminisce about the crazy days of his youth while walking around the old age home with the back of his hospital gown open. Or, if we're talking Biden — the front.

But the article cluelessly proves its own point. If Shafer, a long-time media type around New York and D.C., set out to mourn the death of traditional journalism, he just wrote its epitaph. And on that gravestone, of course, would be a story about RussiaGate.

MEDIA MELTDOWN: WHY JOURNALISM IS BATTERED AND BLEEDING

What traditional media miss today isn't swagger. Like Joe Biden's bowels, it's control. Strangely, all of the swaggering types that Shafer cites from the good old days are the characters who would be drummed out of the first newsroom they applied to by people like Jack Shafer.

I'm talking about the hard-drinking, hard-charging, grizzled white dudes who were often abrasive, obnoxious and politically incorrect. Think Lee Marvin but with a typewriter. The kind of dinosaurs that founded the country but are now the world's designated Bond villain. If Ben Franklin were alive today, he'd be sitting in HR, lectured by a non-binary Karen because no women signed the Declaration of Independence.

But really what Schafer's mad about is that the media are no longer seen as heroes. He writes, "… thanks, in part, to a fall in status, as well as ever-irrational attacks from politicians like Trump, today's journalists routinely experience ridicule and harassment at public events like rallies and demonstrations."

True, they're Kilmeade in high school. So let's get this straight: You sold us a years-long lie on Russian collusion. You tried to convince us that a laptop that was obviously genuine was fake. You were cheerleading the bogus lawfare against the leading presidential candidate

Now you're crying because Trump doesn't like you? Because the rest of us no longer genuflect? You're lucky we don't lock up your entire profession on a RICO charge. But Jack does have a point that today's mainstreamers are cowards.

Here's former CNN reporter Michelle Kosinski writing on X about a dinner she recently attended in Florida, which she claims still haunts her. "All were well-educated and successful in careers. They seemed great! On the surface. For like an hour. But slowly, over a few drinks, they began to let slip their true MAGA natures... "

Wait. Were they polite? Did they pay the bill? Did they not burn down a police station? What gave them away? I bet someone called b******* on her legacy media elitist conformity. Perhaps it was a little MAGA swagger, no? See, it's not about swagger at all. It's that someone has more swagger than them.

Trump isn't living in the legacy media's head, he's the f****** landlord who keeps raising the rent. He's like a squatter the owners can't get rid of because he changed the locks. So the main thing Shafer misses is that the direction of this doom f****** called journalism originated from the mentality of the grad schools and the groupthink that he coddled.

The Shafers of the world really want to see how the profession degraded? Look no further than the machine that churned out these clones. But Jack can't say that because he's one of them, which makes him a bystander to the decline.

You're not some whistleblower here, Jack. You're just another cog in the machine. Then there's this little tell regarding what's really on this guy's mind: At the end, he adds, "No, Fox News does not swagger."

Sorry, have you seen Trace Gallagher? He's like James Dean mixed with a Dodge Charger. But Jack felt compelled to add that part because he knew that that would be the reaction — that there is swagger, but it's coming from all the places he and his buddies hate.

So move over, Donald, you got company in their heads. In fact, there's plenty of us swaggering around in their tiny brains. Lucky for you, Jack, I don't take up much space.

Americans breathe in carcinogenic chemicals found in cars: study

On May 8, 2024

An article in Environmental Science and TechnologyRead more

Researchers have found that a source of carcinogenic chemicals is in Americans' cars – but there may be a way to reduce your risk.

Environmental Science and Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal, published a study called "Flame Retardant Exposure in Vehicles Is Influenced by Use in Seat Foam and Temperature" on Tuesday.

The study explains that Americans breathe in chemicals from the flame retardants in their vehicles. The chemicals can cause issues ranging from developmental neurotoxicity to thyroid hormone dysregulation and even cancer.

The types of chemicals found in flame retardants range from polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which were common in cars until the early 2000s, to alternative brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPEs).

STUDY FINDS EVIDENCE OF MICROPLASTICS IN BRAINS AND OTHER ORGANS

The federal government requires a level of flame retardants in vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandated the use of flame retardants in the 1970s.

"Flame retardant (FR) chemicals are intentionally used in electronics, furnishings, and building materials to meet flammability standards," the study explains.

STD RATES SKYROCKET AMONG AMERICANS 55 AND OLDER: CDC

"Most [flame retardants] are used in an additive manner (i.e., not chemically bound), and many are semivolatile, indicating that they can be present in both the gas phase and partially in the condensed phase (e.g., particles and surfaces), depending on environmental conditions."

Americans who drive professionally or face long commutes may be at a higher risk of harm from the chemicals.

"These findings highlight that commuters are likely to be exposed to [flame retardants], especially those with longer commutes or those who drive vehicles full time as part of their employment," the paper read.

"In addition, children, who breathe a greater amount of air per kg body weight compared to adults, would also be at risk of greater exposures for equivalent commuting times."

Drivers and passengers in warmer states may face a greater risk of breathing in the flame retardant chemicals. But rolling down car windows, turning off the AC and parking in covered garages may help reduce exposure to the dangerous chemicals, researchers say.

"Increasing ventilation by opening vehicle windows and avoiding recirculating interior cabin air may also reduce exposures," the study said. "However, the greatest reduction in exposure from vehicle air would come from significantly reducing the amount of FRs added to personal vehicles."

'Squad' member Rep. Tlaib calls for Netanyahu's arrest; GOP senators warn ICC of serious repercussions

U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib urged the International CrRead more

"Squad" member Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., called for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials in Israel for what she called violations of the Genocide Convention under international law.

In a press release on Tuesday, Tlaib called out the government of Israel for its ground invasion of Rafah, linking the U.S. to the attack because of funding it provided.

"It’s no coincidence that immediately after our government sent the Israeli apartheid regime over $14 billion with absolutely no conditions on upholding human rights, Netanyahu began a ground invasion of Rafah to continue the genocide of Palestinians — with ammunition and bombs paid for by our tax dollars," she said. "Over 1.5 million Palestinian civilians, including over 600,000 children, are trapped in Rafah, living in makeshift tents, without food, clean water, sanitation, medicine, or any form of shelter."

Tlaib accused Israeli forces of killing over 35,000 Palestinians and displacing families in Rafah, exposing them to more "unimaginable human suffering."

BIDEN WARNS NETANYAHU AGAINST RAFAH INVASION AS ISRAEL PREPARES FOR ACTION

She also warned her constituents in the release that many of her colleagues would express concern over the "crimes against humanity" in Rafah, even though the same colleagues voted in favor of giving Netanyahu the means to do so.

"Do not be misled, they gave their consent for these atrocities, and our country is actively participating in genocide," Tlaib said. "For months, Netanyahu made his intent to invade Rafah clear, yet the majority of my colleagues and President Biden sent more weapons to enable the massacre."

She claimed Netanyahu will only stay in power as long as fighting continues, adding that the U.S. must stop funding Israel.

"It is now more apparent than ever that we must end all U.S. military funding for the Israeli apartheid regime, and demand that President Biden facilitate an immediate, permanent ceasefire that includes a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the release of all hostages and arbitrarily detained Palestinians," Tlaib wrote.

"I urge the ICC [International Criminal Court] to swiftly issue arrest warrants for Netanyahu and senior Israeli officials to finally hold them accountable for this genocide, as is obviously warranted by these well-documented violations of the Genocide Convention under international law."

ISRAEL URGES PALESTINIANS TO EVACUATE RAFAH AHEAD OF EXPECTED GROUND OPERATION IN HAMAS STRONGHOLD

Tlaib’s office did not respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment on whether Hamas leaders responsible for the atrocities in Israel Oct. 7, 2023, should also be held accountable for their actions and arrested.

Despite the "Squad" member’s request for action, 12 U.S. senators warned Karim A. A. Khan, the prosecutor for the ICC, that any actions against Netanyahu and other Israeli officials would result in severe sanctions.

In a letter obtained by Fox News Digital, the 12 senators, led by Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., told Khan the arrest of Netanyahu would not only be illegitimate. It also lacked a legal basis.

ISRAELI TROOPS GAIN OPERATIONAL CONTROL OF GAZAN SIDE OF RAFAH CROSSING, IDF SAYS

"The ICC is attempting to punish Israel for taking legitimate actions of self-defense against their Iranian-backed aggressors. In fact, in your own words, you witnessed ‘scenes of calculated cruelty’ conducted by Hamas in Israel following the October 7 attacks," the letter states. "These arrest warrants would align the ICC with the largest state sponsor of terrorism and its proxy. To be clear, there is no moral equivalence between Hamas's terrorism and Israel's justified response."

The letter also advised Khan that the ICC is prohibited from proceeding in any case unless the relevant government is willing or unable to police themselves.

"By issuing warrants, you would be calling into question the legitimacy of Israel’s laws, legal system, and democratic form of government," the letter stated. "Issuing arrest warrants for the leaders of Israel would not only be unjustified, it would expose your organization’s hypocrisy and double standards."

ISRAEL BEGINS 'TARGETED' STRIKES AGAINST HAMAS IN RAFAH

The senators told Khan his office had not issued warrants for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei or any other Iranian official, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad or any other Syrian official, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh or any other Hamas official nor General Secretary of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, or any other Chinese official.

The letter also reminded Khan that neither the U.S. nor Israel are members of the ICC, and any action against them is outside the organization’s jurisdiction.

"If you issue a warrant for the arrest of the Israeli leadership, we will interpret this not only as a threat to Israel’s sovereignty but to the sovereignty of the United States," the senators said. "The United States will not tolerate politicized attacks by the ICC on our allies. Target Israel and we will target you."

The letter warned that any action against either country would result in the end of all American support for the ICC, sanctioning of ICC employees and associates and barring Khan and his family from the U.S.
